Ministry Backs Vinaka Fiji Tree Planting Project in Naviti

The Ministry of Forestry is backing a major tree-planting initiative led by Vinaka Fiji to help reforest and support communities in Naviti, Yasawa. This project, funded by Vinaka Fiji, aims to plant 1,500 seedlings in each of the villages of Muaira and Soso, bringing conservation, food security and income opportunities to local villagers.

Vinaka Fiji’s team will plant a mix of native and fruit trees, including Yasi (sandalwood), kumquat, soursop, etc. These trees were chosen for their benefits to the environment and community. Native trees help with conservation, fruit trees support local food supplies and sandalwood trees offer a potential future source of income.

The seedlings were sourced from registered vendors in Nadi and Lautoka under the guidance of the Ministry of Forestry. Two ministry officers are committed to the project, assisting with seedling transport and logistics.

The Ministry has been instrumental in moving the seedlings to the Fisheries Wharf in Lautoka, from where they are taken by boat to Naviti. To ensure safety, all seedlings are fumigated by Biosecurity Authority of Fiji before leaving for Yasawa.

Vinaka Fiji, a volunteer-driven organization run by the Yasawa Trust Foundation, focuses on improving services and facilities for Yasawa Island villages. Through direct aid and sustainable programs, they aim to protect the natural environment and support community needs.

This collaboration between the Ministry of Forestry and Vinaka Fiji is set to make a lasting impact, promoting sustainability and resilience for the villagers of Naviti.
