Ministry of Forestry Establishes Nursery for Remote Cakaudrove School
Students at Kabu kei Nailoca
Primary School in Valevoni Village, deep in the Saqani district of Cakaudrove
Province, are set to benefit from a new nursery established with assistance
from the Ministry of Forestry.
A team from the Ministry’s Northern
Division spent November 25–28 constructing the nursery and conducting training
on sustainable forestry practices. The initiative aims to support the school’s
long-term development plans and help it generate income despite its remote
location.
Kabu kei Nailoca Primary School,
which opened in 2018, serves 62 students in primary education and five in
kindergarten. Located 17 kilometres from the nearest public road (Nasasa Road),
the school is only accessible by four-wheel-drive vehicles due to poor road
conditions.
During the visit, the Ministry’s
team:
Built a nursery for the
school.
Provided training on Sustainable
Forest Management (SFM), focusing on skills applicable to yaqona farming.
Conducted a workshop on nursery
establishment and management.
Ministry representatives involved
in the project included Nursery Field Assistant Jone Lului, Driver Orisi
Baleitavea and Forest Guard Lekima Tikoilau from Seaqaqa.
Residents of Valevoni Village,
which has no network coverage and suffers from limited infrastructure,
described the assistance as a blessing. The training equips the school to
implement sustainable forestry practices that could improve its financial
outlook while addressing the challenges of its isolated location.
This effort underscores the
Ministry of Forestry’s dedication to empowering rural communities through
practical support and capacity building.
