Minister Ravu Opens Cyclone-Proof Model House
The Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Honourable Kalaveti Ravu officially opened a new cyclone-proof model rehab house in Nasinu last week. This model house is designed and constructed by the Ministry of Forestry to address the needs of rural maritime communities for whom access to imported construction material is quite costly.
Hon. Ravu said the model house will serve as a beacon of resilience and innovation, showcasing sustainable building practices for our rural and maritime communities.
As part of the Ministry of Forestry’s Wood Utilization project annual workplan, the project team members will have to produce four (4) products within a financial year. For this year, the main product was the construction of the model rehab house using residues from harvesting forests and trees as well as wood processing and machining residues as an alternative source of raw materials for manufacturing wooden products.
The model rehab house exhibits more than the four products planned for this financial year using a structure designed for rural housing, utilizing 11 direct posts (treated Fiji Pine) and with Mahogany furnishings as well as raintree interior finishing.
The Ministry of Forestry is providing the House Plan and the Material Listing of this model rehab house, free of charge. Members of the public interested to get a copy of this plan and material list can visit the Ministry of Forestry Training Centre in Nasinu. Our officers are also available on site, if anyone is interested to take a tour of the model house.
