British American Tobacco and Ministry of Forestry Carry out Mangrove Planting in Nadi

The British American Tobacco (BAT) has led a mangrove planting initiative at the Yako foreshore in Nadi. This event, facilitated by the Ministry of Forestry Fiji, marks a continuation of environmental conservation efforts from 2023 and coincides with the global celebration of World Environment Day on June 5th.
The initiative involved the procurement of 100 mangrove propagules from the Navolau Women’s Club in Ra, at a cost of $200, funded by BAT. These propagules were transported from Navolau to Nadi by the Ministry of Forestry.
Before the planting commenced, a traditional Sevusevu ceremony was presented to the Taukei Nakaria of Yako Village.
Mangroves play a critical role in protecting coastal ecosystems. They serve as natural barriers against storm surges, prevent erosion, and provide habitats for a wide array of marine life. Additionally, they act as significant carbon sinks, thus helping to mitigate the effects of climate change.
The Yako foreshore, having previously benefited from a similar initiative in 2023, continues to see positive environmental impact from these sustained efforts.
