The leadership and various levels of management of the
Ministry of Fisheries and Forestry were today encouraged to find the strengths
and values of their staffing and to untilise it towards realizing the shared
ministry’s goals in the service to the people of Fiji.
‘Be the best versions of yourselves’- Minister for Fisheries
and Forestry, Hon. Alitia Bainivalu said this while delivering her New Year’s
message during the Ministry’s New Year Dedication Church Service at the
Centenary Methodist Church in Suva.
The Hon. Minister stressed that the Fisheries and Forestry
Ministries are at the forefront of driving economic growth through the
sustainable management of our natural resources.
“We are tasked with creating economic opportunities, whether
through long-term or short-term employment, and fostering an environment that
supports innovation and entrepreneurship in these vital sectors,” Hon.
Bainivalu said.
“Through our efforts, we contribute to improving the
standard of living for our people and bring much-needed foreign exchange
earnings to boost our economy,” she added.
The Hon. Minister highlighted that on the international
stage, our commitments to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs) remain central to our work.
“SDG 14: Life Below Water aligns with the Ministry of
Fisheries, while SDG 15: Life on Land reflects the priorities of the Ministry
of Forestry. These, along with other overarching SDGs, guide our strategic
plans and operational goals. By aligning our corporate and strategic plans with
these global priorities, we ensure that we fulfill both our national objectives
and our international obligations.
“At the heart of our ministries is our most valuable
asset—our people.”
Hon. Bainivalu urged everyone to prioritize continuous
capacity building, policy reviews, and the creation of an enabling environment
for staff development.
“By fostering personal growth and promoting strong work
ethics, we can achieve higher job satisfaction, enhance productivity, and build
a cohesive team ready to tackle the challenges ahead.
“As we step into 2025, I encourage each one of us to work
together in harmony as Team Fisheries and Forestry. Let us strive to achieve
the goals we have set for ourselves and our nation, with dedication,
innovation, and unity.”
She concluded with a verse from the Bible to inspire her
staff in their work: Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not
for men; (Colossians 3:23).
“This reminds us to approach our duties with diligence and
purpose, knowing that our efforts contribute to a greater good.”
The sermon delivered by Rev Sekope Waqa focused on Jesus
Christ being the source of power for people, and a strong connection to him is
necessary for growth.
And He is a beacon of light that can lead us to another new
year of delivery to the people of Fiji.
Also in attendance at the church service were the
stakeholders for both the Fisheries and the Forestry Ministries.
